History of NZ Post

- Established in the 1830s - 170 years of rich history.

- Early whalers and missionaries had to wait for the occasional passing ship for inward/outward communication.

- In 1840 saw NZs first official Post Office opened in Kororareka.

- The Local Posts Act of 1856 and the Post Office Act of 1858 signalled a perioed of growth for NZ Post Office.

- With settlements across the North and South Islands an internal post routine was important.

- By the end of 1880 there were over 850 post offices.

- The NZ Post Office then went into the 20th Century as a burgeoning government department, now with over 1700 offices.

- The introduction of airmail in the 1930s enabled faster and more efficient services.

- Postmasters were able to perform marriage ceremonies.

- The 1970s saw an installation of NZs first mechanical mail sorting machine and also the introduction of address postal codes.

- April 1987, NZ Post Office was corporatised and split into 3 separate companies - Telecom, Post Bank and New Zealand Post.

- 1998 years later, deregulating the New Zealand postal market opened room for competition.
(There is now over 25 individual postal operators)

- 2001, Domestic letter volumes fall by 1.6%

- 2002 Kiwibank launches with 211 branches nationwide.

- 2005, overall mail volume drops by 1.4%

- 2008 received a corporate social index review of 51%
